Various opportunities for student thesis research are available for both USN METOC and USAF students. Some potential opportunities include:

  • Deep learning applications for satellite data
  • Observational analysis of data from the CALifornia Investigation of Convection over Ocean (CALICO)
  • Numerical modeling of convection over ocean or near terrain features
  • Observational and modeling projects related to large-scale tropical marine atmospheric dynamics
Research in CaRS is funded by multiple agencies, including the Office of Naval Research. Our work is highly relevant toward ultimately improving the representation of complex processes in the atmosphere in the numerical models we use operationally for weather and climate prediction. Students interested in clouds, remote sensing, or machine learning with METOC applciations are always invited to inquire about research opportunities. Beginning the thesis topic selection process early during your time at NPS will greatly benefit you regardless of what you decide to pursue. All students in completing a thesis in the CaRS group will be expected to enter with or rapidly develop coding skills. Most code developed in CaRS is written in Python.
