The CALifornia Investigation of Convection over Ocean (CALICO) was a joint effort of NPS, the Naval Research Laboratory, and San Jose State University in February-March 2022. During CALICO, the NPS Twin Otter sampled convective updrafts near cloud base and a scanning Ka-band Doppler radar observed precipitating and non-precipitating cumuliform clouds. Vertically pointing microwave rain radar and Doppler lidar characterized the kinematic structure in both the sub-cloud layer and the clouds to which dynamics beneath cloud base were connected. Analysis of the dataset is currently underway. Find out more here.
